For many kids these days learning to read is a big challenge.  Fortunately many problems can be prevented or resolved with early reading help.  Too many parents do not act quickly enough to get their children the help that they need.  The older a kid is the harder it is from them to learn how to read.  For most kids the greatest potential for reading success comes in their early years.  It is very hard for a child to catch up if they have not learned how to read by the end of third grade.  From this point on kids can continue to fall farther behind and may end up feeling like they have failed.

One of the most important things is to learn about your child’s reading problem as soon as possible and get them the reading help they need.   For a parent it can be difficult to know what to do if they suspect their child has a problem with reading.  While some kids will just need a little bit of time to get the hang of things others will need help.  Parents are in the position to know their children best.  Be sure to trust your instincts and ask for assistance if you need it.

Teachers will have children in their classroom from many different backgrounds.  Teachers should be trained to recognize and a help a student who is struggling with reading.   The first thing a teacher should do is get to know the student a little better.  Often struggling readers are more successful if given materials that interest them.  It also helps if the teacher takes some time to get to know the family.  This will make it easier to get them involved in helping the child succeed.  Anything a teacher can do to support reading in the home will help the child learn to read.  Sometimes teachers will need to get specialists involved in working with the child.
